Thredbo River Fly Fishing Guide

The river

The Thredbo River runs from the alps above Thredbo village down through open valley country to Lake Jindabyne. It's a genuine wild trout river, clear and cold, with runs, riffles and quiet pools that each hold fish. The trout here live and breed in the river, so they're in beautiful condition and they know when something isn't right.

I've fished the Thredbo for years and I know which water fishes best in different flows and light, so we spend our day on the stretches that are actually producing.

How we fish it

This is fly fishing at its best. Through the warmer months the mayfly hatches bring the browns and rainbows up, and matching the hatch with the right dun or spinner pattern is often the whole game. When nothing is showing on top, we work nymphs through the runs or search the water with a likely pattern.

A lot of it is sight fishing, spotting a trout holding in the clear water and putting a careful cast in ahead of it. I'll help you read the water, pick the fish and get a clean drift.

Seasons and access

The Thredbo fishes through the river season, roughly October into the cooler months, with the mayfly fishing at its peak over summer. It's walk-and-wade fishing, so we cover ground along the bank and fish the best water as we go. Nothing too strenuous, just steady fishing on foot in beautiful country.
