An easy day on the water

We cover a lot of water on Lake Eucumbene and Lake Jindabyne, pulling lures behind the boat while we watch the rods and enjoy the scenery. It is a friendly way to fish, there is time to talk, have a laugh and a bite to eat, and when a rod buckles over it is all hands on deck.

All the gear is supplied and the boat is AMSA surveyed, so it is a comfortable, safe day for everyone aboard. Kids take to it quickly and often out-fish the adults.

Getting the lure to the fish

The trick with trolling is putting the lure in front of trout at the depth they are holding. We flatline near the surface when fish are up high, run lead core line to get down a bit deeper, and use the downrigger to place a lure right in the zone when the fish are sitting well below the surface.

I use the sounder to find bait, mark fish and read the thermocline, that band of water where temperature changes and trout like to sit. Once we know how deep they are, we set the gear to match and the results follow.

Lures and winter fishing

We run a spread of proven lures and colours and change them until we work out what the trout want on the day. Winter is a favourite time of mine on these lakes, with brown and rainbow trout feeding hard as the water cools, and trolling is a reliable way to stay on them through the colder months.
