The country

Up on the plateau you've got lake after lake of wild browns, most of them self-supporting fish that have never seen a hatchery. The scenery is rugged and open, and the fishing rewards anglers who like to hunt rather than just cast and hope.

I know these waters and I read the conditions, so we're on the right lake for the wind and the light on any given day.

How we fish it

Summer is mayfly time. When the duns come off, the browns rise with real purpose and it's classic dry fly fishing. On the bright days we go polaroiding, walking the shallows and spotting fish before we cast to them, which is about as good as trout fishing gets.

Wind lanes concentrate the food and the fish, and I'll put us onto them when they set up. It's sight fishing at its finest.

Planning a trip

I run these trips from December through February. Because it's a fair way from home, we plan the dates well ahead and make the most of the time on the water.
