Do I need any experience?
Not at all. I guide complete beginners through to experienced anglers. If you have never held a rod, we start from your first cast and work at your pace. If you already fish, we sharpen the finer points and get you onto better fish.
What is included in the price?
Everything you need for the day: rods, reels and lines, waders and boots, plus lunch, snacks and refreshments. You just need to bring warm and wet weather clothing, a broad-brimmed hat, polarised sunglasses and a current fishing licence.
Do I need a fishing licence?
Yes. A current NSW recreational fishing licence is required in the Snowy Mountains, and a Tasmanian angling licence for the Central Highlands trips. Both can be applied for quickly online before your trip.
How do I book, and is there a deposit?
Get in touch first so we can lock in a date and work out the details. A $200 deposit secures your booking. Our full booking terms are on the terms page.
How many people can come?
Trips are run for one or two anglers on the boat, which keeps it personal and productive. For trolling in particular it is a great social day for a pair. Get in touch if you have a larger group and we will work something out.
Are the boats safe and licensed?
Yes. I hold an Inland Coxswain AMSA Certificate and both boats, in NSW and Tasmania, are in survey to AMSA specifications. I also hold a current First Aid certificate and carry a first aid kit.
What is the best time of year to fish?
The Snowy Mountains fish well year-round, each season with its own character, from the November midge on the flooded margins to strong winter trolling. The Tasmanian Central Highlands trips run through summer, December to February, for the mayfly and polaroiding.
Fly, trolling or lure - which should I choose?
It depends on what you want out of the day. Flyfishing is close, visual and rewarding; trolling is relaxed, social and very effective; lure casting is active and mobile. Tell me what appeals and I will point you the right way.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We fish in a range of conditions and often the fishing is good when the weather is not perfect. If conditions are genuinely unsafe we will talk and find another date. Come dressed for warm and wet weather so you are comfortable whatever the day does.
Can you guide trips in Tasmania?
Yes, each summer I run flyfishing and trolling trips in the Central Highlands of Tasmania, on waters like Great Lake, Arthurs Lake and Penstock Lagoon. Because it is a fair way from home, contact me well ahead so we can plan the dates.
