Chasing Rainbow Trout with Troutfit Guiding

Rainbow trout are the crowd favourite for good reason. They are aggressive feeders, they fight hard, and they are famous for the acrobatic runs and jumps that make landing one such a thrill. Across the Snowy Mountains lakes and rivers, rainbows give anglers of every level a genuinely exciting day on the water.

Our guided trips are set up to make the most of that energy. We work out where the fish are, match the method to the conditions, and put you on rainbows that will test your gear and your grin. Whether it is your first time fishing or you are chasing a better day than you can manage on your own, we tailor the trip to suit you.

Rainbow behaviour and the fight

Rainbows tend to be more willing than wary browns, which makes them a great fish to learn on. They cruise and feed actively, chase moving lures and flies, and hit with real commitment. Once hooked they run fast and often leap clear of the water, so we talk you through playing the fish properly to keep it buttoned on. That mix of a willing take and a spirited fight is what keeps anglers coming back for them.

Where and how to find them

On the lakes, rainbows patrol the open water and the shorelines and follow bait and insect activity, so we stay mobile and adjust as the day changes. In the rivers they hold in the faster, well-oxygenated water and the seams where current meets calm. We read the water for you and explain what we are looking for, so you come away better at finding fish yourself.

Fly fishing and trolling

On fly we fish dries when the trout are looking up, and nymphs, wets and streamers through the feeding zones the rest of the time. Trolling and casting lures is a highly effective way to cover the lakes and stay on active fish, and it is a relaxed, productive option for families and mixed-ability groups. We choose the approach that suits the day and what you want to get out of it.

Best conditions and coaching

Rainbows fish well across a range of conditions, and overcast, breezy days often bring them right on. We read light, wind and water to time the day well, and we coach every angler at their own level, from first casts and knots through to refining presentation and playing fish. Beginners, families and experienced anglers are all welcome.
